The origin of the species is somewhat uncertain due to its extensive prehistoric cultivation. It was known in Armenia during ancient times. 

The scientific name for this plant is Prunus armeniaca. Additional name for this plant include Ansu Apricot, Armenian Plum, Cherry, Peach, Plum, Siberian Apricot, and Tibetan Apricot.
