Borage contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are hepatotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. It is an annual herb in the flowering plant family Boraginaceae. Its leaves are edible the seeds can be extracted for oil. This plant is native to the Mediterranean region and has naturalized in many other locales.
