The Bread and Butter Plant has its origins in Southern and Eastern Africa. It is cultivated and elsewhere in the tropics where it is used as a medicine, spice, and ornamental plant. It is a semi-succulent perennial plant in the family Lamiaceae with a pungent oregano-like flavor and smell.
The scientific name for this plant is Plectranthus amboinicus. Additional names for this plant include Indian Borage, Spanish Thyme, Coleus, Maratha, Militini and East Indian Thyme.
