The Butterfly Iris is poisonous for both cats and dogs.

Typical symptoms include diarrhea, drooling, lethargy, salivation and vomiting.

The Butterfly Iris is classified as rhizomatous perennial plant which came from Asia, Europe and Africa. It is part of subgenus series known as Limniris and in the Series Spuriae. These beautiful lilac or purple flowers are widely known as spurious iris, bastard iris and blue iris. It has lots of subspecies from Iris spuria subsp. demetrii B.Mathew, Iris spuria subsp. carthaliniae B.Mathew, Iris spuria subsp. Musulmanica and Iris spuria subsp. maritima (Dykes) P.Fourn. Three of its subspecies have been re-classified as separate species; Iris spuria ssp. Sogdiana, Iris spuria subsp. notha and Iris spuria subsp. halophila.

The scientific name for this plant is Iris spuria. Additional name for this plant include Bastard Iris, Blue Iris, Spuria Iris and Spurious Iris.
