Caraway is a biennial plant that resembles the other members of the carrot family. They have fruits that are crescent shaped achenes and leaves that are feathery and finely divided growing up to 30 cm on stems. They are native to western Asia, Europe, and North Africa and member of the family Apiaceae.
The scientific name for this plant is Carum carvi. Additional name for this plant include Meridian Fennel, and Persian Cumin.
