Eastern Star is a herbaceous perennial with few annual and biennial species that belong to the family Caryophyllaceae. They feature linear, opposite grey green to blue green flowers and pale to dark pink flowers with 5 petals. They are native to native mainly to Europe and Asia, with one species in arctic North America and a few species extending south to north Africa.
