The Mayapple is poisonous for both cats and dogs.

Typical symptoms include coma, dermal – redness, diarrhea, drooling, lethargy, panting, skin ulcers and vomiting.

Mayapples is a herbaceous perennial plant that usually grows several stems in a single root. They belong to the family Berberidaceae and the sole species in the genus. Their leaves are like an umbrella and the flowers have 6-9 petals which turn into green, red or yellow fruit when they mature.

The scientific name for this plant is Podophyllum peltatum. Additional name for this plant include American Mandrake, Duck’s Foot, Ground Lemon, Hog Apple, Indian Apple Root, Mayapple, Raccoonberry, Umbrella Leaf, Wild Lemon and Wild Mandrake.
